Colomokee: On a Mission from God

As we draw closer to meeting again in person, it's on my heart to refresh, renew, and refocus our church on a clear sense of mission. Tonight I'm starting a "mini-blog series" here on Facebook to help accomplish that. Each post will be short and sweet, and focused on our mission and vision moving forward. Here's the first one...

Christ works through each of His true churches in a way that is both uniform, and unique. Certain things should be consistent across every gathering of believers. One obvious example -- we all should faithfully proclaim the truths of Scripture.

And at the same time, each church exists in a unique context and consists of a unique group of believers. Churches should be different from one another. We have different people, different spiritual gifts, different skills, different resources to draw from, different relationships to pour into. We face different challenges and are called to do different good works prepared in advance specifically for us.

Churches should be similar in critical ways that Scripture itself emphasizes, and . . .

. . . churches should be unique from one another as they faithfully fulfill the particular mission God has providentially placed before them.

Our differences are a good and wonderful thing, and we can rejoice in that.

Colomokee does not have to be like other churches. And other churches do not have to be like us. We can rejoice in what God does through other churches, and we can fully embrace the unique work He sets before us.

It is tremendously liberating when we grasp this. There is no need to compare, no need to compete, no need to criticize, and no need to try to be something God is calling someone else to be.

I encourage you to reflect on that. Let it settle a bit deeper in your heart.

And next time, I'll dive into what I believe our particular, providentially placed, God-given mission is at Colomokee.
